Harbor

MEET HARBOR!!

This unique little lady is just truly delightful. An amazing, loving and well-behaved girl. We just adore her so much.

She came to us from a wonderful woman who has been giving her a very loving home and all the care she needed. Unfortunately, she was given this sweet dog as a gift and she just never had the right bond with her. We sadly see this so much. Its not fair to give someone a pet. That commitment and bond needs to be a decision made by the owner. This was very hard for her but was a true decision of love for Harbor and herself. This cutie is ready for someone to pick her as their new best friend.

Harbor is a 3-year-old female. She is a Basset Hound/ Lab mix. An odd mix making her look a little like a Harbor Seal, hence the name lol. She has been spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines already. She is thankfully heartworm negative. (Her previous family said she does need her anal glands expressed from time to time. A vet or groomer can easily do this or you can potentially learn to do it yourself if you’re comfortable. )

She is very overweight right now which we are working on. It is important for her to lose the weight as her low and long body will have future health problems if she remains to heavy. Her current weight is 49 pounds although she does not at all look that big. She should likely be closer to 30-35 pounds at ideal weight.

Harbor is a lover. She wants nothing more than to be sitting with you or beside you. She loves for you to be touching her or to give you hugs. She absolutely needs multiple belly rubs every day. She is very loving and friendly with everyone. We just adore her gentle and loving spirit.

She has been good with other dogs she has met. She has been fostered with cats and mostly ignores them. She will whimper when she sees them and you can tell she has an urge to chase, but she either stops herself or listens when you tell her “Leave it.” She walked up to one of the cats in her foster home to sniff it and backed off right away when he swatted at her. It doesn’t seem like she has much experience with cats yet but does not seem like she will try to hurt them.

Harbor has been great with kids. She is sweet and loving with them and likes kids that will lay around with her and rub her belly.

She is already potty trained. She rides well in the car and is very good on a leash. She is happy to go on adventures with you and enjoys to go on walks. She has done great with crate training. Her foster describes her as having wonderful manners and a calm demeanor. She says having Harbor in the home is about as easy as it gets. She adjusted quickly and has been an instant favorite among everyone at the rescue.

Harbor has a medium to low energy level. She is happy to lay around and be lazy on the couch all day but will also go on walks anytime you want. She likes to play with her plush toys and follow you around the house. While she is on her weight lose journey it would be best to bump up her activity level a bit with additional play time and/or walks.

The only negative behavior we have seen from Harbor is mild food aggression with other dogs only. She has not trouble sharing with humans. She does not steal food from other dogs. If she has her food in her crate or in an area where she is eating she will growl a warning if other dogs approach. It has not gone any farther than a growl but we do feed her separately to give her space to eat. She will eat in her crate making it easier to keep separated if you have other dogs.

Harbor is really a special dog. She wants nothing more than someone to love her and hang out with her. She is easy to have around, has wonderful manners and is already trained. Hard to ask for much more from a rescue dog!!

**She will need a family committed to helping her lose the extra weight as that is not healthy for her. **Located in Hampton VA.
(She will need to be adopted within a 2 hour drive radius)
