MEET PONGO!!!
This big boy is a fun and sweet boy. He’s an active guy with a chill side once playtime is done.
Pongo will be 2 years old next month. He’s a male, Poodle and Lab mix. (Yes that’s right, a “Doodle” is just a mixed breed that can favor the characteristics of either parent.) He currently weighs 68 pounds.
He will be neutered, microchipped and update on his vaccines as part of his adoption. He is thankfully Heartworm negative. He is NOT hypoallergenic (most “doodles” are not and many get rehomed due to that common misconception!) He does shed less than a regular dog.
Pongo is a big boy and he has a hyper side. He needs a family willing to work with him on a few things but he’s great with most of his training. He’s got a fantastic foundation and just needs a bit of refinement. He’s very treat motivated and learns quickly.
He is doing great with potty training. He does wonderful on car rides and just sits in the seat. He loves going on walks and is pretty good on the leash but pulls when excited. He does better with a harness. He’s used to walks but will get scared sometimes and try to pull away in new places. He’s excellent with crate training. He has no problem going in and is quiet and content when crated.
Pongo loves playing and needs an outlet for his energy. He needs his new family to commit to exercise so he can be his best self. He loves wrestling and playing with other dogs, walks, chasing people dogs or a laser pointer, playing soccer with the kids etc. He enjoys active things and needs that outlet for his energy. Once he’s gotten that out of his system, he is very relaxed in the house and will follow you from room to room and just plop down beside you and hang out.
He has been great with all other dogs he’s met. He loves to play rough but also seems to know when another dog has had enough. He has fostered with a cat and he is a bit too much for them. He likes to chase them and has been kept separated. He’s been excellent with children and has grown up around them. One of his main issues with training is that he does jump up on people and use his mouth to try and mouth your hands/arms. It’s not done in an aggressive way. It’s all excitement. Aside from that he is amazing with all people and children, but he does need to learn still that those are not acceptable behaviors.
Pongo has not had any trouble sharing treats, toys or food with other people. He has growled a few times when other dogs approach his food. This seems to be fading as he gets to know the new dog in the home, but we still recommend he be fed separately. He is fine with people around his food when he’s eating. He also loves shoes. So far he’s not eating them, but he will pick one up and play a long game of keep away with you if they’re left available to him.
If you’re willing to put a little additional training time into Pongo and give him the exercise he requires, you will have an amazing dog. He’s extremely loving and sweet and a good mix of active and calm.
♦️♦️GROOMING “Doodles” are a mix of two breeds and despite the hype they generally have hair from both dogs they are bred from. This causes terrible matting and means they require lots of brushing. They also usually need to be professionally groomed at least every 6 weeks. For a “Doodle” this is usually over $100 every time, often more as their hair mixture can be very difficult to work with. If you aren’t willing to provide the time and finances toward his grooming, please pick a different dog to adopt ♦️♦️
Vet and home checks required.
Located in Hampton VA.
(He will need to be adopted within a 1 hour drive radius)
